How to optimize for Paywalls?
Start leveraging your content today.
There’s enough optimization strategies for eCommerce, but barely any for media brands. So let’s focus on: how to improve content paywalls in this first edition.
Back when I was doing my master’s in journalism, the industry was in the middle of a huge shift from print to online. The biggest fear at the time? That people wouldn’t pay for content on the internet.
Fast-forward to today, and paying for online content feels normal. But the real challenge has changed: where do you draw the line between free and paid?
That’s where conversion optimization comes in. A well-designed paywall isn’t a barrier. It's a door. The difference is how you position it, when it shows up, and what you give readers on each side of it.
👉 I’ve written a full blog on this (with examples and strategies). You can read it here: [Conversion Rate Optimization for Paywalls: Turning Walls into Doors].
🎥 Or, if you prefer, we made a YouTube video out of this content too:
Most important? The rule of FAV:
When we optimize paywalls, we like to start with something simple: the FAV rule.
Frictionless → People have a limit to the effort they’ll take. The signup process has to be smooth (think BJ Fogg’s Behavior Model: motivation + ability + prompt). In other words, for someone to take action, they need to want it (motivation), they need to feel it’s easy enough to do (ability), and they need the right nudge at the right moment (prompt).
Articles → Long-form articles are often the biggest drivers of subscriptions.
Value → You need to clearly communicate what’s in it for them. Subscribe now and you’ll unlock exactly the content you came here for + more…
FAV sets the foundation.
